According to 9to5Mac, there has been evidence that Apple may introduce a new feature in the latest iOS 13.4 that is rolling out from Feb 5. There is an indication confirmed by 9to5Mac, which states that Apple may make it possible for iPhone users to unlock their cars with the new digital ‘CarKey’ feature.
The feature, when spotted, also confirmed that it could also work with Apple Watch too. The latest iOS 13.4 beta version was released yesterday on Feb 5, which embarks this hidden ‘CarKey’ feature that will allow you to access your cars such as locking, unlocking, and even starting the engine of your vehicle through an iPhone or Apple Watch.
The new ‘CarKey’ feature API references are embedded in the internal files of iOS 13.4 that will make it happen to unlock, lock, and start any car, which is NFC compatible. Besides, many car manufacturers provide their own apps for digital unlocking of vehicles, but Apple is focusing more on eliminating the limitations set by them.
How to use this feature?
To use CarKey, hold iPhone or Apple Watch to the reader. It will work automatically, without requiring Face ID. You can change specific mode settings in the Wallet.
It’s effortless to use, and if you lose your car keys, then you are always backed with this digital key.
Is it useful for Apple users?
As per the reports, 9to5Mac says – “users will be able to use CarKey in NFC-compatible cars, as they only need to hold the device near the vehicle to use it as a key.”
That means if your car is not NFC compatible (well nowadays, its familiar in every car manufacturer), you will not be able to access this feature.
Apart from that, the other significant advantage of this feature is – “It will not be necessary to authenticate with Face ID, similar to what happens with Express Transit Cards. It also means that the feature will work even with iPhone or Apple Watch out of battery.”
Moreover, you can also share your digital CarKey with other users inside the Wallet app of your Apple, where this digital key resides.
Will Apple support every car manufacturer?
This is only the first beta version of iOS 13.4, which is released, and Apple may be working with some car manufacturers to deploy the ‘CarKey’ feature. Till now, it’s not confirmed which car manufacturer it will be supporting, and probably it will not be apparent until the official version of iOS 13.4 is released.
