Reddit’s New Policy Update Bans Impersonation on the Platform, Allows Only Caricature in Posts

Reddit, a content rating and news platform, recently updated its policy and terms regarding the impersonation of users in their posts. The new policy update is to allow impersonation of any Reddit user identity or posts no longer ambiguously or deceitfully.

However, this new update on imitation will affect all the explicit and altered videos and other content that are posted on the platform. Besides, users implicating lies in impersonating others through web content online would also be concerned.

Reddit updates its new policy under the expansion of banning deepfake porn videos on the platform in 2018, similarly after Facebook updated its policy for deceptive content.

See the announcement post by Reddit for its new policy update.

“Impersonation is actually one of the rarest report classes we receive (as you can see for yourself in our Transparency Report), so we don’t expect this update to impact everyday users much. The classic case of impersonation is a Reddit username pretending to be someone else– whether a politician, brand, Reddit admin, or any other person or entity. However, this narrow case doesn’t fully cover things that we also see from time to time, like fake articles falsely attributed to real journalists, forged election communications purporting to come from real agencies or officials, or scammy domains posing as those of a particular news outlet or politician (always be sure to check URLs closely– .co does NOT equal .com!).”

Reddit claims that ‘Impersonation’ is the lowest report classes that they have received and assures its users that the new policy update won’t affect them. Besides, the company is focusing more on “eliminating bad actors who are trying to manipulate Reddit, particularly around issues of great public significance, like elections. To this end, we thought it was time to update our policy on impersonation.” said u/LastBluejay, Reddit Admin.

Here’s the updated rule language by Reddit:

Do not impersonate any individual or entity misleadingly or deceptively in a misleading or deceptive manner.

Reddit does not allow content that impersonates individuals or entities in a misleading or deceptive manner. This not only includes using a Reddit account to impersonate someone, but also encompasses things such as domains that mimic others, as well as deepfakes or other manipulated content presented to mislead, or falsely attributed to an individual or entity. While we permit satire and parody, we will always take into account the context of any particular content.
